The Machame Route is used by trekker to about 53% of them, and most seasoned trekkers choose the Machame route.This route is popular for many travelers either in join groups, single or private climbers. It is planned for physically fitting people with some trekking practice, but plenty of first time.
Day 1: Drive to Kilimanjaro National Park Machame Gate, Hike to Machame Camp
This is the beginning of 7 days Climb Machame route on Mount Kilimanjaro. After arriving at the gate you will start your trekking adventure moving 5-6 hours for 11km from the gate through montane forest habitat. This is from 1830m to 3050m high reaching the Machame camp where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Hike Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Soon after breakfast you will continue trekking from 3050m to 3850m high reaching the Shira camp which is 5km from the camp. It will take you 4-5 hours to reach the camp, where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Hike Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
In the morning after breakfast you will move from 3850m to 4000m through Semi-desert climate for 5-6. This is a 10km journey stopping at the Barranco camp, where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Hike Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
You will have breakfast at the camp then climb from 4000m to 4050m high taking you 3-4 hours moving 5km. you will be passing through Alpine desert climate reaching the Karanga camp where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Hike Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Early in the morning after breakfast you will carry on with hiking from 4050m to 4700m, through Alpine desert climate. This is 4km distance from the camp taking you 3-4hours to reach the Barafu camp where you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Hike Barafu Camp to Summit, down to Mweka Camp
You will have breakfast then proceed to the summit which is from 4700m to 5895m high where at the summit you will spend some few minutes. Then you will descend to 3090m reaching the Mweka camp through Stone scree and ice-capped summit region, this will take you 5-7 hours ascending 5km and 5-6 hours descending 13km. At the camp you will have dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Hike Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, drive to Moshi
On this day as you will be finalizing your trekking adventure you will descend to the gate soon after breakfast. This is to the height of 1680m through montane forest habitat covering 10km from the camp for 3-4 hours. At the gate you will be given your trekking certificate by the authority then you may have a brief celebration before you’re taken to a hotel in town. remember to tip your porters.
